My goal as a business owner has always been to give back to the community - here are a few of the local and nationwide charities that The Knitting Nest is currently helping!
The Texas chapter of the Special Olympics has asked The Knitting Nest to help them collect 3000 scarves by December 31st! The scarves can be any pattern you choose - they need to be Red and Black, 54-60 inches long and about 6 inches wide. Most importantly: they need to be washable. We will be serving as a collection spot for several groups in south Austin - Please join us and help us spread the word. You can read more about the scarf project on The Texas Special Olympics Website
Saint Louise House provides affordable housing and essential services to mothers and children experiencing homelessness in Central Texas. The Knitting Nest is very happy to help with this group in Austin in any way we can - we always collect hand knit and crocheted washcloths for the households.
At Project Linus, a non-profit organization, we provide homemade blankets to children in need. Our blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different sources. The Knitting Nest is proud to be a supporter and Drop-Off location in Austin. The Crochet Guild of Austin regularly makes flannel receiving blankets with crocheted edges that are collected by Project Linus and delivered to Dell Children's Hospital for the babies in the NICU.
We need plain blankets donated (they are available at Target, Walmart, Carters,)and we also need crocheters to pick up one of these blankets to take home and work on the edges. The staff at Dell NICU say these blankets help in so may ways - they are very important to the babies, the families AND the staff!!
